Directions in Music
Directions in Music is a musical collaboration and tour that began in 2001, marking the 75th anniversary of the births of John Coltrane and Miles Davis. Joining Herbie are Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone) and Roy Hargrove (trumpet). The trio, celebrating Davis’ and Coltrane’s spirit of exploration, featured new, innovative treatments of familiar material from the two jazz greats. The group also wrote original pieces for the tour, including the Coltrane tribute “D Trane.” A live recording of the tour, Directions in Music: Live at Massey Hall, won much critical acclaim, including a Grammy Award in 2002 for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group.
Continuing their collaboration, the trio embarked on a follow-up tour Directions in Music: “Our Times”—an exploration of the music and themes of contemporary composers such as Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Stevie Wonder and Herbie himself, among others.
